In March 2008, Ian Atkinson, also known as Acker or Geordie, died peacefully following a short illness. This has been confirmed by his brother Donald who says Ian had many friends in the US, where he moved in 1989, as well as in Italy and the UK. He leaves his wife Lavinia and son Brent and, I'm sure, many memories for those of us who knew him. His obituary can be viewed here

I had a good few beers with Geordie over the time at Locking, rest in peace mate _________________ All the best

"Oh Dear. I liked Ian - he was a laugh. R.I.P old friend....."

"Sad news. I remember Ian as a very kind fellow. I borrowed his bicycle many times while at Locking. He once scared the hell out of me while driving his red Zepher Six from the camp to Hutton Village. We met up again on Gan in 1969. He was selected for aircrew training while on Gan so may not have done a full tour of 12months"
My Mother and I were very touched by the outpouring of heartfelt emotion and support given by every one of my Father's friends. It has been a very tough time for us both, and we couldn't have proceeded without all of the kind messages and love that we received from everybody, we thank you so very much for this.
My Father touched so many people in this world as evident by the funny stories we heard, and sincere sympathies we received, he is still missed so very much by all of his friends and family.
He truly was a one of a kind man, and this world is a sorer place without him.
Thank you so very much for the wonderful sentiments posted on my fathers obituary page from you and your members at the RAF Apprentice Radio School in Locking.
My Father was very proud to be in the RAF, and especially his Radio and Satcom profession. Through the Apprentice School at Locking my Father was able to travel the world and live life to the fullest, as many of you at the Apprentice School will have no doubt remembered!
It was nice to read about my Father and his friends he met at such a young age, the stories from Locking I can just imagine, he kept them quiet from me though, well apart from a couple of stories about weekends in Weston, probably for the best I'd imagine lol !!
Your kind words and condolences really meant a lot to my Mother and I, and we so very much appreciate it.
It has been almost a year now, and its still like yesterday for us both, the man was bigger than life.
