Started the [birthday] celebrations by having a tooth extracted yesterday - well, you can't be a proper old git with all your teeth can you?
Tony your problem seems to follow a trend- toothache is a common complaint at the moment. A friend and his wife both had teeth extracted recently and Jan and I have also had aching teeth.

After four days of agony, I gave in and got an emergency appointment with the dentist. He found a cracked filing, which he redid. It made the tooth feel better but it didn't really fix the basic cause. Then other teeth started hurting, but not so bad. That seemed suspicious and it's possible that the problem may be caused by the recent virus that has been going around.

Painkillers help to make life more bearable and can also reduce swelling and thus reduce pressure on the nerves which may be the cause of the problem. The dentist explained that Big G didn't design the nerve system very well- it appears that many of the nerves are combined at the back of the jaw and this can lead to some misleading symptoms.

Now, a week later, it's nice to be back on solid foods again!

Sounds like fun Chuck. Apart from viruses, it looks like some teeth probs are age related. I have had 2 extractions in the last 6 months. Don't know which is more painful: the injections, the tooth extraction or the wallet extraction (£45.60). My NHS dentist (who calls himself a Dental Surgeon and uses the title Doctor) is only about 17, wears jeans and hasn't shaved for a week so doesn't instill much confidence in me. The experience is made a bit easier because his nursing assistants are also about 17, wear jeans and smile alot. There is always pop music blaring out which thankfully drowns the sound of your tooth graunching and crunching as it is extracted bit by bit. He spends alot of time tapping stuff into a computer behind your back (probably working out the most expensive way of dealing with each problem). How times change.

Ah, a different scenario with your teeth Tony. Your dentist charges sound very reasonable- about the same as our's.

Apart from being named Cruise, our dentist is very conservative and about 40. But his assistant is the same as your dentist's, but wears a dress. Yeah, the injections can be fun, especially around the back teeth.

We should all be paying the same Chuck. There are only 3 NHS charge bands:
- approx £16.50 for a check-up and clean & scrape
- £45.60 for up to 3 fillings or extractions (includes the £16.50)
- approx £185 for dentures and stuff like that (includes the £16.50).

Tony, you're lucky to find a dentist charging NHS rates! When I last lived in the UK in Suffolk, all the local dentists went private, we had to take out a private insurance at about £30/month. Without that the extraction fee was £150. Out here the charges are quite high for dental work, I had an extraction a year or so ago and it cost me $250. The plus point is I can set that cost against my tax Cool
On another topic about forum adverts, Chucks last post had an ad for a dental service at Brisbane airport Very Happy ---

It's still the same here Geoff. Since the Government imposed those 3 charge bands many many dentists have gone private and it is very difficult to find an NHS practice, although the new NHS Primary Care Trusts that are springing up all over the place usually have a dental practice tagged on. I guess many NHS dentists are now going to be the inexperienced ones who are not yet in a position to set up a private practice, hence the spotty unshaven 17-year-old who can't afford trousers that I go to.

There was a programme on BBC2 last night about targetted advertising, particularly as applied by Google. It was actually very interesting and explained why so much stuff on the web is free to use.

Yanks and Aussies have been coming here for many years for dental treatment but now couples from UK are coming on holiday and getting dental treatment and new glasses at the same time.
